The accident between a BMW and a Maruti car near near Connaught Place in Delhi continues to cause a major outrage.
The association of BMW owners said they were feeling threatened and violated by this attack. They did not name Marutis specifically but said it was a pattern that was threatening their way of life and their freedom to drive on Indian roads. Mr. Beemer, the head of the association said they would rally tomorrow for everyone’s freedom to drive in the country.
The New York Times ran an editorial questioning India’s record of handling newer cars. In a scathing attack, the editorial pointed to the multiple accidents in which BMW, Mercedes, and other foreign-made cars were damaged in India.
India’s own TV studios had expert panelists discussing how the country has changed so much in the last few months that BMWs no longer feel safe. And that Marutis should be extra sensitive to the needs of the BMWs, who are definitely fewer in numbers.
Extreme right-wing publications like the Maruti-janya, Mar-ganiser, and Maruti-Central tried to give it a communal twist by publishing reports that many more Marutis had been damaged in accidents. Thankfully, the Idea of India prevailed and not many paid heed to these fringe elements.
Mr. Modi, perhaps worried about additional criticism coming his way, issued an apology to the BMW that was hit by the Maruti. He also asked everyone to maintain peace and harmony and ensure that BMWs could drive peacefully in the country.
